MAJOR INTERVENTIONS / ACHIEVEMENTS FROM 1968 - 2009:

CHILDREN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES:

EDUCATION INTERVENTIONS:
  1. 100% enrolment in schools in 175 villages.
  2. 4602 Children have availed educational assistance.
  3. 433 Youth have completed higher studies with our scholarship.
  4. 6 Supplementary schools are run in remote villages.
  5. 3000 young men and women have made right choice in education and employment.
  6. School Dropout rate has reduced to less than 10% in tribal and Dalit areas.
  7. First generation of tribal communities is in the school in several tribal villages.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT:

Scholarship program:

Youth who have completed high school and higher secondary school education were given scholarship at the very beginning of academic year, so that the students can get the educational materials early and start learning very easy. Scholarship includes books, notes, bags, other study materials. They are also provided with monitory support to meet their other educational needs. Students taking up various receive Scholarship from Salem Social Service Society.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT:

SSSS has implemented numerous intervention programmes for women from its inception. The following list shows some of the major highlights.

  1. Facilitated 1355 women Self Help Groups (SHG).
  2. 18,000 women are organized into 9 Community Based Organizations.
  3. 10,000 women have been trained in micro enterprises.
  4. Nearly 5000 women are self employed in micro enterprises.
  5. More than 100 Women have occupied official positions in the local self governance ( Panchayat Raj institution).
  6. 132 elected women have been given leadership skill development training.

AIDS AWARENESS AND INTERVENTION:

Salem and Namakkal districts have the higher rate of HIV/ AIDS infection in Tamil Nadu, i.e. 24% higher than all other districts in Tamil Nadu. SSSS has carried out many interventions to combat the disease.

  1. Serving as the District Health Resource centre for a state level health network organization called 'Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association', Chennai.
  2. Facilitated a district level network for the People Living with HIV/AIDS.
  3. Hygienic health practices introduced at the individual and community level.
  4. Medical camps were organized through Village Health Clubs.
  5. HIV / AIDS awareness created in all of SSSS target villages.
  6. District level Campaign and advocacy carried out to remove stigma & Discrimination.
  7. 84 People living with HIV / AIDS received care & support and counseling services.

HOUSING:

A House is not only a physical structure to protect the inhabitants from sun, rain and dangerous animals but it is a symbol of dignity and assertion of one's Rights.

  1. Monitory support had been extended to more than 2000 families for the renovation of their dilapidated houses.
  2. 500 houses have been constructed for the homeless.
  3. Distributed 40 Acres of land as House site to the poorest of the poor.
  4. The homeless people have been guided to avail loans to build houses.

ENVIRONMENT:

SSSS has been actively involved in generating awareness on Global Warming and Climate Change in rural and urban areas of Salem and Namakkal districts. It has taken concrete steps like planting trees, conducting campaigns, exhibitions and rallies to save the earth from environmental degradation.

  1. Planted of 30,000 saplings in villages under personal care of individual families.
  2. Promotion of Environment Watch Dog Committees comprising of students and youth in the name of Nature's Eyelids.
  3. Won District Level Awards for Best Environment Exhibition held during Flower Show Festival at Salem District.
  4. Stopped Bauxite Mining in Salem district through Campaign and Advocacy.
  5. Conducted Surveys and researches on the degradation of the environmental condition in Salem Diocese.
